Have you read The Clown of God? Did you enjoy it?
I just found The Little Juggler retold and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. (I have no idea how I missed it before.) It's an adaptation of the same legend and I like it so much better! Both tell of the juggler who presents to Mary and the Christ child the only gift he has, himself and his skills. Tomie dePaola's illustrations are fun, as always, but Barbara Cooney's are lovely. I also prefer the style of the prose. Not least, the juggler is still very much young and alive at the end of Cooney's version.
It is, of course, out of print. There seem to be quite a few copies available on Amazon, though...
