Juggler Tales

Have you read The Clown of God? Did you enjoy it?

I just found The Little Juggler retold and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. (I have no idea how I missed it before.) It's an adaptation of the same legend and I like it so much better! Both tell of the juggler who presents to Mary and the Christ child the only gift he has, himself and his skills. Tomie dePaola's illustrations are fun, as always, but Barbara Cooney's are lovely. I also prefer the style of the prose. Not least, the juggler is still very much young and alive at the end of Cooney's version.

It is, of course, out of print. There seem to be quite a few copies available on Amazon, though...

  1. Thanks! I was not aware of this book either, but our library happens to have a copy, so I'll check it out.
I'm not crazy about The Clown of God, but it's not too bad. I think I preferred Jingle, the Christmas Clown for the kids, as far as de Paola's Christmas books go.

  2. I saved the list of Christmas books you sent, but haven't read through them yet. I did just request Jingle. I'm always thankful for book suggestions!

Comments make me happy; thanks for speaking up!
