Random Tip No. 7

If you are worried about how well your newborn is eating and growing, use cloth diapers instead of disposables. It's a lot easier to see and feel how wet they are.

  1. I'm curious, since we just switched to cloth pull-ups for bedtime... Do you have to wash the diapers 2 or 3 times to get the urine smell out of them? Or do my kids just pee a lot at night?

  2. Mazzucco, we have found disposables work best for us overnight. The kids all developed rashes when we used cloth. (No problems with leaking, though.) The smell is definitely stronger on those overnight diapers.

There are lots of things you can try to see which work best on getting the smell out for you. (It often depends on how hard or soft your water is and the kind of washing machine you have.) It might be something as simple as adding BioKleen to your diapers (though then you have to rinse a lot to make sure you get it all out). I have had the best luck recently using Rockin' Green detergent on our diapers. I soaked them, too, when I first started using it. They also sell a new product (Funk Rock, I think) which I haven't tried. It's designed specifically to get that ammonia smell. (
