Kami and the Yaks by Andrea Stenn Stryer, illustrated by Bert DodsonIn this story, Kami realizes his father and brother are searching for the yaks, eager to load them for a trek up the mountain. Though he is deaf and frightened by an approaching storm, Kami searches for the yaks in all their favorite places. Though he finds them, he must convince his father and brother to trust him and follow him through the storm.
It's a wonderful story of courage and an intimate knowledge of the family's animals, their livelihood. Kami is a marvelous role model for young children.
The illustrations are beautiful watercolors. My favorites show Kami surrounded by the rugged wilderness of his home, illuminated by lightning.
