Our 2019-2020 Poetry Books

These are the books I read for our poetry in 2019-2020. About once a week, I'd read a few poems while the children ate breakfast. We didn't memorize them or analyze them; we just listened and enjoyed.

In 2019-2020, I had a tenth grader, a seventh grader, a fifth grader, and a third grader.

In One Door and Out the Other: A Book of Poems by Aileen Fisher - I requested this book from PaperBackSwap.com because we've enjoyed so many of her poems. It was delightful, though by the time I read it aloud to my children, the poems were a little young for them. My favorite poem was Music Box which ended:
But Mother's all
that hinders me
from making noise continually.
Poetry for Young People: American Poetry edited by John Hollander - I have enjoyed other books in the Poetry for Young People series. We read all the poems in this book, along with the little paragraphs for each. Some were favorites, many were familiar, a few were unknown even to me. Though it's a different kind of collection, in general we preferred Hand in Hand as a collection of American poetry.

O Holy Night - We read from this book during the Advent and Christmas season.

Children of Long Ago poems by Lessie Jones Little, pictures by Jan Spivey Gilchrist - This is a sweet little book with poems celebrating a child's every day activities and feelings. The illustrations show African American children, which sets is apart from many other books of poetry. I think it would appeal most to younger children.

The Monster Den: Or Look What Happened at my House -- and to It by John Ciardi - This book was recommended in one of the poetry conversations in the Mater Amabilis™ Facebook group. It's a quirky book of poetry inspired by the poet's children and family life. We all enjoyed it.

A Family of Poems ed. by Caroline Kennedy - This is one of my favorite collections of poetry. I pull it off our shelves whenever I didn't request a book from the library in time. Also in times of pandemic when our library is temporarily closed.
I have received nothing in exchange for this post. Links to Amazon, Bookshop, and PaperBackSwap are affiliate links.
